Railway kiosks for flood relief

Jamshedpur, Sept. 4: The Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway has decided to help the flood victims of Bihar.

Special counters have been opened at various railway stations like Tatanagar, Rourkela, Jharsuguda, Barbil and Chakradharpur to collect relief for the victims.

A circular was also issued by Chakradharpur division for free booking of relief materials at the parcel office at various railway stations. “Any private organisation, trust or government agency can book relief material free of cost at the booking offices,” said Tatanagar area railway manager T. K. Bhattacharya.

He said a disaster management cell has been opened at Chakradharpur. The cell will monitor the movement of consignments of relief materials to Bihar from various places under Chakradharpur division. The disaster management cell and the counters would be opened till next month.

Meanwhile, the Adityapur Small Industries Association (ASIA) has collected more than Rs 10 lakh from its members. A portion of the amount collected would be used to buy relief materials, while the rest would be given to an NGO engaged in relief operation.

“In order to ensure that the relief materials and funds reach the needy people, we would send a team of volunteers from ASIA to the flood-ravaged Bihar. We have not decided on the organisation that would sent the relief to Bihar,” said ASIA spokesperson Inder Agarwal.

The association is expecting to add more funds to the amount collected after a meeting that has been called today to discuss the flood situation.

Several other Jamshedpur-based NGO’s and workers’ union of industries pitched in to collect funds and relief materials for the flood victims.

Members of Tinplate Workers’ Union undertook a door-to-door campaign in Golmuri and Sidhgora to collect donations and relief materials.

The South Eastern Railwaymen’s Congress donated 10 quintals of rice and 2.5 quintals of pulses for the flood victims.
