Man held for kidnap help

Siliguri, Sept. 3: A person who had provided information to two kidnappers on the minor son of a former GNLF councillor was arrested here last night.

Police said Surojitprasanna Dey was picked up from Hakimpara. Dey had told Raju Das and Suraj Majumdar the whereabouts of the nine-year-old boy whom they had planned to abduct. On August 31, Suraj was arrested after the police stumbled on the plot and Raju was apprehended the next day.


Toy Train

Siliguri: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway resumed its Toy Train service between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling on Wednesday. The 1D train left NJP station at 9am and the 2D train left Darjeeling at 9.15am. The service had been suspended between the two stations because of landslides and bandhs from June 7.


Women arrest

Siliguri: Two women were arrested on Wednesday for trying to get two minors admitted to a school with fake documents. Mita Bose and Shelly Mitra of Hakimpara and Matigara respectively were apprehended on the basis of a complaint lodged by the school authorities.


Minors drown

Islampur: Sufala Khatoon (13) and Ansara Khatoon (12) of Botiapara here drowned in the Doloncha on Wednesday. Police said the two girls who were working in a small tea garden, 20km from here, fell into the river after a landslip. Residents retrieved the bodies and rescued two other women.


Dacoits

Malda: Six dacoits were arrested near the office of the agricultural marketing officer on NH34 on Tuesday night and arms were seized from them. Police said the dacoits were planning to raid the nearby petrol pumps in the area.


Cultural meet

Siliguri: Himali Boarding School of Kurseong won an inter-school cultural competition at Green Lawn School in Mirik. Over 21 institutions from the hills and Sikkim participated in the meet.
