In solitude

The lion-tailed macaque is an endangered species and can only be found in the Western Ghats.

It is also known as the Beard Ape because of its distinctive silver-white mane. The lion-tailed macaque has dark brown or black fur and a tufted tail, similar to that of a lion.

It is primarily frugivorous (feeding on fruits alone) but also eats insects, storing food in cheek pouches.

It lives in groups comprising 10-15 individuals with a male for its leader. While single males form their own groups, the females maintain strong ties and remain in their natal group.

This species is known to communicate using different vocal patterns and body language. For instance, they smack their lips to greet one another.

The lion-tail macaque is shy and fearful of humans and prefers to live in seclusion, high up in the trees.
