Officials swear by December date

Jamshedpur, Sept. 2: Call it over-confidence or optimism, the organising committee is certain that the state would deliver the National Games in time (December 31).

“The velodrome, sports village, Birsa Munda Stadium, kho-kho and kabbadi grounds are ready. The synthetic track at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex in Hotwar would be laid in a fortnight and the imported roof would be fixed in November,” said organising committee secretary-general Syed Matloob Hashmi Hashmi.

But the basketball court in Ranchi is far from complete. “The pace of construction is slow but we expect the facility to be ready by November,” said Hashmi.

With speculations rising, a series of inspection meets are being drawn out. A.K. Matoo, the chairman of the Games steering panel, will visit Ranchi on September 9 for an inspection. He will also visit Jamshedpur and Dhanbad.

Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi is also expected to tour the state capital around September-end.

Today, too, the National Games Organising Committee (NGOC) took stock of the situation during a meeting convened at the JRD Tata Sports Complex.

Besides Hashmi, East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Rabindra Kumar Agarwal, Jharkhand Olympic Association (JOA) treasurer M.K. Pathak, members of different city-based sports bodies and Tatanagar Area Railway Manager T.K. Bhattacharya attended the meeting.

Accommodation, beautification, transportation, reception as well as the infrastructure facilities at the four venues were discussed.

Discussions also centred around the 250-bed sports hostel to be built at Chandinag to receive athletes and sports officials. South Eastern Railway (SER) is working in tandem with the Games reception committee to organise the ceremony.

The government has also approved Rs 1.17 crore for infrastructure development while Rs 80 lakh has been approved for renovation purposes and building changing rooms, toilets, store rooms and other facilities.

Another Rs 37 lakh will be spent on accommodation facilities. “The fund will be handed over to the deputy commissioner shortly,” the NGOC secretary-general added.

About the sports hostel, Agarwal said, things were on the right track and they were awaiting government approval.

“The government had earlier approved Rs 3.66 crore but we sent a revised budget. An agency is developing the facilities for us,” he added.
