Five suicides in 24hrs

Islampur, Sept. 1: Five suicides were reported from different areas of the subdivision in the past 24 hours.

Bimal Singha (24) of Bhaishbhita and Surya Burman (18) of Mirdhabusti in Chopra, Lal Mian (45) of Kharibusti in Islampur and Anwara Begum (17) of Hatgachi in Goalpokhor committed suicide by consuming poison at their residences last night. Tula Sarkar (48) of Madhusudangach in Kanki set herself ablaze today. Family problems had led the five to end their lives, police said.


Electrocuted

Siliguri: Jhoru Majumdar, a plumber of Santipara in New Jalpaiguri, was electrocuted on Moday. The 38-year-old accidentally touched a live wire while working at a house in Saktigarh. He died on the spot.


Cleaner killed

Islampur: The cleaner of a private bus on the Gangarampur-Siliguri route died in an accident on Monday. When Moloy Singha (30) was checking the front tyres of the bus on way to Siliguri, a Raiganj-bound truck ran over him on NH31. Karandighi police have seized the truck and arrested the driver.


Garden death

Alipurduar: A worker of Bharnobari Tea Estate in Kalchini committed suicide by consuming poison on Sunday night and died at Hasimara Central Hospital on Monday. Police said family feud had led Gopal Biswakarma (50) of Gajram Line to commit suicide.


Body found

Malda: The body of a criminal was found at Sujapur in Kaliachak on Monday. Feroz Sheikh’s body was found beside NH34 with his head smashed and several stab injuries. The 25-year-old had fled the area along with his accomplices in December. Police said a hunt was on to arrest the murderers.


Dacoits held

Alipurduar: Two persons were arrested on Sunday on charges of robbery which was committed on Saturday. Acting on a tip-off, Birpara police picked up Rama Shankar Sha and Prafulla Basak of Shishubari. Prafulla had purchased the grocery which Rama Shankar and his associates had stolen from a shop in Birpara.
