Market shut down by goon aides
The associates of slain extortionist Maach Swapan, alias Swapan Bar, forced a bandh in Kalibabur Bazar in Howrah on Thursday to mourn his death. Over 1,500 shopkeepers downed shutters, but residents alleged that the bandh would not have succeeded without the support of the CPM. The bandh had been called by the Kalibabur Bazar Matshya Byabashyee Samity. Maach Swapan was president of the body.
Mill worker found dead
Jhantu Das, 34, a worker of a rolling mill and a resident of Bally, was found dead on Thursday. Family sources said Jhantu was summoned to the mill by its owner and murdered. The factory owner claimed Jhantu died after touching a live wire. An unnatural death case has been started.
Gastroenteritis
A 69-year-old-man died of gastroenteritis in ward 19 of Kanchrapara municipality, on the northern fringes of the city, on Thursday. Around 40 people have been hospitalised with the disease.
ccording to a health official of North 24-Parganas, a preliminary probe revealed that a water pipe passing through a sewage channel might have sprung leaks, contaminating the water.
Green drive
The civic authorities pulled down about a hundred banners and festoons from roadside trees and utility structures in south Calcutta on Thursday with the help of city police and the newly launched Green Police. Civic chief manager (advertisement) Debasish Sen said the drive was carried out on SP Mukherjee Road, between Kalighat police station and Harish Mukherjee Road intersection.
Fire in factory
Three persons, including a woman and a year-old child, were injured when a fire broke out in a bangle factory in Colootolla Street on Thursday afternoon. Five fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the blaze. The injured were taken to Medical College and Hospital, police said. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained .
Road mishap
A 16-year-old boy, Sanjeeb Mandal succumbed to his injuries after a car hit his bicycle at the APC Road-Haji Zakaria Street on Thursday. Mandal was taken to Medical College and Hospital. The driver of the car has been arrested and the vehicle impounded.
