More Metro trains from Sept 1
Metro Railway will increase the frequency of trains from September 1. According to an official, 12 additional trains would run on weekdays and trains would be available every six minutes during peak hours on weekdays. Two ladies compartments will also be added to each train.
Water supply disruption
There will be no supply of filtered water in parts of south Calcutta and Behala, Garden Reach and Jadavpur from Tuesday afternoon as the Garden Reach waterworks will be shut down. Supply will resume on Wednesday morning. According to civic chief engineer (water supply) Bibhas Maity, filtered water will also not be available in parts of south Sinthee, Bhowanipore and Gariahat after Saturday morning as the Tallah waterworks will be shut down. Supply will resume on Sunday morning.
Man hangs self
A man in his mid-30s committed suicide by hanging himself at his Kalidaspara Lane house in Girish Park on Sunday morning. Bijoy Kundu, who used to work in a printing press, was said to be an alcoholic. Police said he returned home drunk on Saturday night and had an altercation with his wife. No suicide note was found.
Passport tamper
Abul Kalam, 33, was detained at Calcutta airport on charges of travelling on a tampered passport. The resident of Iqbalpur was scheduled to take a Gulf Air flight to Germany. He was caught when he produced his passport for immigration. Airport officials said a page of the passport had been tampered with.
Cash stolen
A thief stole a handbag containing Rs 25,000 from Sadesh Pal, a businessman from Haldia, while he was shopping at the Kalakar Street-MG Road crossing on Saturday night. Pal registered a complaint with Burrabazar police station.
