CU admission till Aug 27
Calcutta University has extended the last date of admission to BA, B.Sc and B.Com courses from August 23 to August 27, a senior official of the university said on Friday. The last date for changing subjects or stream is September 26, the official added.
Youth drowns
Bishu, a 28-year-old autorickshaw driver, was found dead in a Tiljala pond on Friday morning. Police said the Bidhannagar resident fell into the water while catching fish. He was taken to National Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead. The body has been sent for postmortem.
Hit and run
An unidentified vehicle knocked down 45-year-old Rajbir Balmiki, an employee of Medical College and Hospital, outside the main gate of the hospital around 8.15am on Friday. Balmiki was admitted in the hospital with multiple fractures. A case was registered at Bowbazar police station.
Blockade
Autorickshaw drivers blocked the Elliot Road-Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road intersection on Friday morning to protest police persecution. Traffic was affected along Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, Park Street, Ripon Street, and SN Banerjee Road.
Hotel fire
A fire broke out in Green Palace Hotel on Asutosh Mukherjee Road, in the Bhowanipore police station area, on Friday morning. According to police, two fire tenders put out the blaze in half an hour. No one was injured. Fire brigade officers said the blaze originated from an overheated electrical chimney in the hotel kitchen.
Body found
The body of an unidentified man aged about 35 years was found in front of 58 JM Avenue, under Burtola police station, on Friday. According to police, there were injuries on the man’s forehead. He was taken to RG Kar Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The body was sent for post-mortem. An unnatural death case has been lodged.
