Imphal, Aug. 21: Imphal West District Badminton Association clinched the men’s team tie, defeating Thoubal District Badminton Association 3-0 in the 27th Inter-district Badminton Championship, 2008 at MBA Indoor Hall here.

In the first singles final of the team events, L. Nandakumar Singh of Imphal West defeated L. Dinesh Singh of Thoubal in straight sets 21-7, 21-17. In the other singles final, H. Kishan Singh of Imphal West defeated M. Sabayaima Singh in straight sets of 21-10, 21-10. In the doubles final of the team tie events, the pair of L. Nandakumar Singh and L. Momo Singh of Imphal West overcame the Thoubal duo of N. Sanjoy Singh and M. Sanayaima Singh in straight sets of 21-12, 21-18.

In the veteran team tie finals, it was Manipur Civil Services that got the better of Imphal West District Badminton Association 2-1.

In the first singles event, I. Shantikumar Singh of Manipur Civil Services lost out to Benu Salam 16-21, 21-13, 21-16. However, in the second singles final, L. Kumar Singh of the Services overcame A. Sunitikumar Singh of Imphal West in straight sets of 21-15, 21-20.

In the doubles event final of the team tie events, Y. Samarendra Singh and his partner Ch. Premananda Roy of Services steamrolled Imphal West pair Benu Salam and A. Sunitikumar Singh 21-15, 21-14..

United Progressive Association overcame Friendship Union Club by a solitary goal in the Imphal East First Division Football League played at Imphal East today, reports our sports correspondent from Imphal.

The first half was a rather lacklustre affair with both the teams playing a sub-standard game. However, the second half saw the United team’s trump card, Th. Kiran Singh netting the elusive goal in the 60th minute of the game.
