Malda, Aug. 18: A polygraph test conducted on murdered Congress leader Biswanath Guha’s driver has apparently revealed “discrepancies” in statements which police say would help them grill him better.
Malda superintendent of police Satyajit Bandyopadhyay said although he was yet to receive the report from Bangalore officially, he had learnt that there were “discrepancies” between what Aktar Sheikh had said during interrogations here and his response to the lie-detection test. The lie-test, however, is not acceptable in a court of law.
Guha, the district president of the Intuc, was found murdered in an under-construction lodge close to his house in Malda town on the night of June 12. The police had arrested his driver Aktar that very night.
The investigating officers were convinced that Aktar alone had not committed the crime and that there was a “brain” behind it.
Aktar was then sent to Bangalore for polygraph tests that were conducted on August 6. “He is now in Malda jail where we will grill him again. We also started a fresh interrogation of another accused in the case, Uday Roy, at Englishbazar police station last night,” the district police chief said.
It was Uday who had informed everybody about Guha’s murder on June 12. He was also present when the body was taken to the district hospital.
“We are yet to make a headway in the case. We had earlier interrogated Lakshmi, Guha’s wife whom we suspect had a hand in the murder. We came to know that she had an illicit relationship with Aktar,” Bandyopadhyay said.
Even though the police had “no definite proof” of her role in the murder, they had never kept her out of the list of “prime suspects.”
Aktar had told the police on the first day that he had murdered Guha because he used to “abuse” him all the time. “We believe that Aktar has been suppressing the real reason for the killing,” Bandyopadhyay said.
Deputy superintendent of police Shyam Singh, who had accompanied Aktar to Bangalore for the tests, said: “The truth will emerge during interrogations. But that might take some time.”
