Imphal, Aug. 18: The Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur claimed to have busted a blood donation racket in Manipur’s Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, parading four professional blood donors, an agent and six officials of the hospital’s blood bank before mediapersons today.
The donors were identified as Abdul Hussain, Phundreimayum Eji, Mayangmaayum Thambalngou and Wangmayum Nasir and the agent as Md Achouba.
The organisation demanded an inquiry by hospital authorities and action against the officials involved in the racket.
The organisation’ s publicity secretary, K.C. Ibomcha, said its volunteers launched an investigation and rounded up four professional blood donors. The student organisation said the four donors sold blood thrice a month. A donor is allowed to give blood once a month only.
“The agent gave the four donors Rs 300 each, while he gave Rs 200 to Rs 500 per unit of blood to the hospital officials. He took Rs 800 to Rs 1,300 from the buyers. The blood is sold in connivance with the officials of the blood bank of the hospital,” Ibomcha said.
He added that the professional blood donors posed a serious health hazard, as the blood was not properly examined. The organisation let the blood donors, agent and officials go free after giving proper advice.
