Two killed as truck turns turtle

Two persons were killed and one injured when a mini-truck overturned after hitting the divider near Vidyasagar Setu early on Monday. Police seized the vehicle, but the driver fled.

According to officers of Hastings police station, the mishap took place around 5am when the truck carrying bundles of garments was heading towards Howrah.

“The security guards at the toll plaza told us they had seen the truck — a Tata 407 — speeding and swaying dangerously. Later, it hit the divider and overturned,” said a traffic police officer manning the area.

As the truck turned turtle, it crushed Gouranga Chakrabarty, 50, and Subhasis Kundu, 30, who were sitting in the back.

“The duo were rushed to SSKM Hospital, but they died soon after. We have launched a hunt for the driver,” said Manoj Verma, the deputy commissioner (traffic) of Calcutta police.
