Film producer ‘goes missing’

The family members of film producer Tathagata Banerjee have lodged a complaint with Kasba police station on Sunday afternoon saying he had not returned home for the past week. Banerjee, 36, had left his cellphone back home. Police said the family had not received any ransom call. According to relatives Banerjee sometimes stayed away from for work but never for more than three days without informing them.

Woman interrogated

Anita Gayen, 25, was interrogated on Sunday in connection with the death of her husband, Raju, 35, a resident of Dakshin Sarenga, under Howrah’s Sankrail police station. aju was found hanging from a tree near his house on Saturday morning. Anita claimed he had returned home at 2am and kicked her many times without any provocation. She was admitted to Howrah District Hospital the same night. According to police, the two were not on cordial terms. A police case has been started.

Suicide

A 37-year-old trader committed suicide by setting himself on fire at his residence near Akra, under Mahestala police station, on Sunday morning. Police said Sunil Sarkar was depressed as he had been suffering from tuberculosis and respiratory ailments for a long time. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Passengers fined

Three passengers were fined Rs 200 each at Calcutta airport on Sunday after they left their bags in the visitors’ area of the domestic terminal and went to get food. According to a CISF officer, the unclaimed bags were spotted at 10am, noon and 2pm. No explosives were found inside.

Liquor den

Three illegal liquor dens were attacked by residents of Nischinda, under Bally police station, on Sunday. Residents alleged that police took no action despite several complaints. The police were present when the local residents attacked the dens and arrested three on charges of being involved in the illegal trade.

Watch on strays

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the state sports council on Sunday asked an NGO to control the population of stray cats and dogs inside Yuvabharati Krirangan. ccording to an SAI official, the number of strays has gone up and the sportsmen have complained to the authorities fearing an attack from the strays. Debashish Chakrabarty of Compassionate Crusaders Trust, which is executing the operation, said workers will remove some stray animals to their pounds and sterilise them.

Beaten up

Several people, including a woman, were beaten up after a group of residents clashed with security guards and employees of an “illegal” vermillion factory in Birati on Saturday night. The residents were demanding closure of the unit, in ward 4 of North Dum Dum Municipality. The factory was manufacturing vermillion using mercury for which they did not allegedly have permission. Earlier, the municipal authorities had served a “suspension of work” notice on the factory following protests from a section of residents.
