What did you do on Independence Day? Hoist the Tricolour? Distribute sweets to the poor? Sadly, sleep or watch TV? There’s something special about the day that’s hard to define: what it means to be free. August seems to be the favourite month for breaking shackles. Over 30 countries celebrate their Independence Day this month. Of these, nine are in Asia — Afghanistan, Bahrain, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Pakistan and Singapore.
