Guwahati, Aug. 14: The Congress today netted its biggest catch so far when the vice-president of the Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF) and former AGP minister, Aminul Islam, joined the party.
Along with him, the president of the AUDF's Char Parishad, Abdul Kader, also joined the Congress during a programme organised by the PCC’s minority department at Rajiv Bhawan in the presence of PCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita.
Minority leaders of the Congress, including Misbahul Islam Laskar, Wajed Ali Choudhury, Adil Shah, Rana Khan, Ismail Hussain, Rekibuddin, Idris Ali and Mehdi Alam Bora were present on the occasion.
With the induction of Islam, a good orator who enjoys a broad support base in Lower Assam, and Kader, the Congress not only scored a point over its rival AUDF, but sent a strong signal to the Opposition that the minority community is very much with the party.
Though the AUDF’s top brass could not be contacted, a senior leader said that they would give a fitting reply to the Congress.
While welcoming the two leaders to the party fold, Kalita launched an indirect attack on the AUDF.
He said parties would come and go but the Congress is still going strong after 120 years because of its secular credentials.
