Alipurduar, Aug. 10: Police rescued two persons while they were about to be taken to Delhi by three job racketeers at Kalchini in Alipurduar subdivision yesterday. The three were arrested and sent to jail.

On receiving the information that one Ajinath Oraon was visiting some tea gardens and luring young people with job offers, the Kalchini police swung into action. The garden workers said Ajinath was frequently changing his name.

The police came to know that Ajinath, along with Anita Lohar and Seema Oraon, had reached Kalchini to take boys and girls to Delhi and followed the trio.

The accused were taken into custody in Kalchini’s Chowpathi area and a minor girl, Manika (name changed), and a youth, both the residents of Mainaguri, were rescued.

While Anita and Seema belong to Mainaguri, the kingpin of the gang, Ajinath, is from Kartick near Samuktala.

Police sources said Ajinath had offered lucrative jobs to many people in Nimati, Kalchini, Raimatang and Chinchula tea estates.

The three were produced in the court of additional chief judicial magistrate in Alipurduar this afternoon and remanded in judicial custody.

The rescued girl’s aunt, Jasomati Munda, said: “Manika, who was staying with me, disappeared in the morning of August 7. Our search did not yield any result and we were contemplating filing a complaint when the police told us that the girl was rescued from the clutches of a racket.” The woman said Ajinath used to come to her house with Anita and Seema. “Even I noticed that he had used different names.” She demanded harsh punishment for the traffickers.

Samir Majumdar, the assistant public prosecutor, said there were reports of trafficking from different tea estates. “But, for want of specific information, the police could not do much.”
