NY Sikh murder

New York, Aug. 9 (PTI): The body of a homeless Sikh man, stabbed and battered beyond recognition with a broomstick, has been found outside a gurdwara in Richmond, a US city with a large Indian population.

Police said the man’s features were barely recognisable. The motive is not known and so the police are not treating the murder as a hate crime. The victim apparently used to be a practising Sikh but gave up wearing a turban after turning alcoholic.

Fake note cell

New Delhi (PTI): The Centre on Friday announced a plan to set up a special cell in all states to check circulation of fake currency . The Union home secretary’s statement came in the backdrop of the recovery of Rs 1.5 crore in fake notes in a State Bank of India branch in Dumariyaganj in Uttar Pradesh.

Rape protest

Bulandshahr (PTI): A 20-year-old housewife, allegedly raped by four persons, tore off her clothes on Saturday in a police station accusing police of protecting the rapists.

Birth tragedy

Aligarh (PTI): A woman gave birth to a baby outside a rural health centre after she was allegedly denied admission. The baby was rushed to the nearby district hospital, but could not be saved. Rajna Devi, 22, is still in a critical condition. Three staff members have been suspended.

AC deaths

Kanpur (PTI): Three women died of suffocation on Saturday when a fire broke out after an air-conditioner blast in their house. The fire brigade took more than an hour to control the fire.

Father’s cry

Sirsa (PTI): A labourer accused police of inaction on Saturday saying they were making no efforts to find his two daughters allegedly kidnapped by two masons.
