Couple ‘strangle’ baby
Siliguri, Aug. 8: A couple were arrested today for allegedly killing their three-day-old daughter at Patiramjote, 6km from here, last night.
Matigara police said Anita Das and her husband Mintu, both day labourers, have two minor daughters and recently the birth of the third one had disturbed the couple. Anita told the police that unable to bear the cries of the baby she strangulated it. Early this morning, her husband and her father-in-law Mahendra buried the body on the bank of Mahananda.
The couple then told Alo Burman, a member of Matigara Panchayat-I about the killing. Burman informed the police. Mahendra, too, has been arrested.
Alipurduar: One person was arrested and railway sleepers, fishplates, bolts and wires worth over Rs 2 lakh were seized from his godown at Kamakhyaguri in Kumargram on Friday. Sambhu Saha, who deals in iron scraps, was picked up from his house in a joint raid by the RPF and police. Two stolen motor cycles were also recovered from him. Saha will be produced in court on Saturday.
Siliguri: Acting on a tip-off, forest officials of Baikunthapur division seized a pick-up van loaded with sal timber at Sevoke on Friday evening. Pulak Dutta, the assistant divisional forest officer, said the foresters recovered 19 sal blocks worth Rs 2 lakh from the vehicle. Nobody was arrested as the driver managed to escape.
Siliguri: Bhaktinagar police recovered the body of Hemendra Dutta from the Chandropukur area on Friday. Dutta was a resident of Bharatnagar. Police said there was no external injury marks on the body that has been sent for autopsy.
Siliguri: Salsalabari Institute of Participatory Action and Training Welfare Organisation in association with the BSF on Friday distributed appliances worth Rs 4.69 lakh to physically challenged persons in Alipurduar to make their lives easy and comfortable.
