Mizoram in poll drill

Silchar, Aug. 8: National and regional parties in Mizoram are gearing up for the Assembly elections which are a little over three months away.

Political observers in Aizawl said a third political front, comprising two regional parties and a small socio-political organisation had joined hands against the Congress and the Mizo National Front (MNF).

The three-party forum, comprising the Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC), the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNF) and the Zoram Kuthnathawktu Pawl (ZKP), a civic organisation, was unveiled on Wednesday at the MPC headquarters.

The new alliance will be known as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

MPC chairman Lalhmingthanga said the party had pledged to fight against corruption.

The Congress, under the leadership of Lalthanhawla, a former chief minister for three terms, sprang a surprise last May by including the breakaway faction, the Mizoram Congress Party (MCP), in its fold.

Congress party president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday nominated Margaret Alva, the Congress general secretary, as the head of the 10-member Congress campaign committee in Mizoram.

Three Assam ministers, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gautam Roy and Pradyut Bordoloi, are also part of the committee.
