‘TV career or Bollywood’
- Ram Kapoor, who has made Mr Walia from Kasamh Se a household name, speaks his mind

You have been a husband to four actresses on Kasamh Se. Who would you say is your best on-screen wife?

I am going to be very politically correct here. All of them are good actors. I am very fond of Prachi Desai. We are very good friends. But from the day Gurdeep stepped into Prachi’s shoes, she has performed wonderfully. She is a professional and knows exactly what is required to be done.

Does your character Mr Walia reflect your own personality in any way?

Mr Walia is a complete contrast to Ram Kapoor. But as an actor, I try to absorb the character within me and make the character mine. Though we are different on the macro level, we have similarities. We are hot-tempered; at the same time, we cool down really fast.

You are considered Ekta Kapoor’s blue-eyed boy...

I am not her blue-eyed boy. We share a very good working relationship and whenever we have come together for a project, it has always been a success. She is an individual who expects 200 per cent from her actors. I try my best to give her the desired results. Ekta and I did have our share of differences in the

the past but the ups and downs have never affected our relationship. I would love to continue working with her as long as she offers me great roles!

After such a long association, are there any plans to look beyond Balaji?

I focus on one thing at one time; right now it is Kasamh Se. I am not bound by any contract; if I get a good offer outside Balaji, I will take it.

Why are you not seen on reality shows?

I am not against reality shows. If something good comes up after Kasamh Se, I would definitely do it.

As a viewer do you enjoy TV shows today? Do you enjoy your own show?

I am not the target audience. When I have the remote in my hand at home, I watch National Geographic and Discovery channels. If you turn the spotlight on my show Kasamh Se, all I would like to say is that the audience have, till date, enjoyed what they have witnessed. I am an actor in the show, I just follow the script. When I get an overwhelming response to individual episodes, I feel good about the fact that my show is doing really well.

How important it is to look fit on TV and how conscious are you of that?

It is very important, but I have been totally neglecting it for the last two years. I know I am not in my best shape today but I am hoping that I get time to get back and look fit.

Are TV actors taken for granted in Bollywood?

I don’t think we are taken for granted. Television actors don’t have ample time so it’s best for them to stay away from Bollywood. We are working throughout the year. If we want to join Bollywood, we should be ready to put our television careers at risk. It could be a huge loss, if the film doesn’t work. I have rejected many film offers that came my way. I think today television is huge and offers opportunities aplenty. It is big money too.
