Peace move in school

Islampur, Aug. 7: At a meeting with representatives of political parties and the authorities of State Farm Colony High School, the subdivisional administration today appealed to all to refrain from spreading rumours.

The all-party meeting was called to restore normality in the wake of the violence that rocked the school on Monday.

Police had fired 13 rounds in the air to quell a mob when a clash on the campus of the school spiralled out of control. The authorities had shut down the institution after the incident.

“The school authorities will meet the guardians and ask them to bring to their notice any student-related problem,” said David Lepcha, the subdivisional officer of Islampur. Legal steps would be taken against the perpetrators of violence, he added.

The acting headmaster of the school, Jugal Chakraborty, said classes would resume for the tenth standard students tomorrow in view of their exams. “Other students will be allowed entry after the tension subsides. The police picket will, however, remain in the school till the situation turns normal.”

Besides members of the CPM, RSP, Forward Bloc, Congress, Trinamul Congress and the BJP, administrative officials, chairman of the Islampur Municipality Kanaiyalal Agrawal and the secretary of the ABTA’s Islampur unit Sabbir Ahesan attended the meeting.
