Clash cloud on attendance

Islampur, Aug. 6: Students of a primary school here have stopped coming to classes, scared that the violence that rocked the adjacent institution on Monday may be repeated.

Police had fired 13 rounds in the air to quell a mob when a clash on the campus of Islampur State Farm Colony High School spiralled out of control.

Amaresh Das, the head teacher of Islampur State Farm Basic Junior School that has till Class IV, has been worried since all students decided to stay away from the institution from yesterday.

After Monday’s incident, the high school authorities, too, had shut down the institution and announced that only students of Class X would be allowed in from Friday. The rest of the students would be permitted only if the situation returns to normal.

“On Monday, the students saw the violent nature of the mob. They are scared. But I am worried. How long will they miss classes,” Das said.

Nirmala Sarkar, a Class IV student of the junior basic school, said she could still hear the gun shots. “I am scared of loud noises,” she said.

Das said the teachers would soon visit the houses of the students to tell the parents to send the children to school. He said there were 263 students in his institution.

The authorities of the high school announced today that unit tests scheduled for tomorrow would be held on August 16. The examinations for Class X would be held on Friday, officiating headmaster Jugal Chakrabarty said.
