Jamshedpur, Aug. 5: Time has come to scrap the heavy school bags as the East Singhbhum district education department is planning to introduce active learning methodology (ALM) and “learning by doing” education module within a week.
Under these modules, students will develop interest in learning, as they will have to check attendance and prepare their own progress report.
Six schools have already have been selected for this project. Of the selected schools, four are in Jamshedpur and one each is in Potka and Manpur.
The successful implementation of ALM — meant for students of Class IV to VI — in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has prompted the Jharkhand government to introduce the scheme in the state. It had sent four district superintendents of education to Andhra and Tamil Nadu to know more about the module.
The district education department plans to cover 150 schools of the district under this programme.
Instead of written examination, the students would have to pass 19 milestones to get promotion, said P.N. Singh, district superintendent of EastSinghbhum.
In Active Learning Methodology after the teacher explains a topic the stu- dents would have to understand it and make a presen- tation. And, those who could not understand in the first go would get an opportunity to learn while doing revision.
The best part of ALM is that it enables students run the class on their own even when the teacher is absent
Taking into count the standard of living of the village students, ALM would come as a boost as students will get rid of books that most of the poor families cannot afford.
