Student injured

Dipak Sharma, a Class X student, was critically injured when a truck carrying iron rods hit the bicycle he was riding on a Liluah overbridge on Tuesday morning. Dipak was injured in the head. The truck had hit a van and a motorcycle before knocking down Dipak. The student was taken to Jaiswal Hospital and later shifted to Medical College and Hospital.

Woman killed

A woman was killed and four others injured when a drunk cellphone thief on a motorcycle hit a van on Muraripukur Road, in Maniktala, around 12.10am on Tuesday. Panibala Dolui and three others were trapped between the two vehicles. The woman was taken to RG Kar Hospital where she was declared dead. Arvind Joshi, the man on the two-wheeler, was taken to NRS Hospital. Five stolen cellphones were found on him. Police said the motorcycle was stolen from MM Burman Street, in north Calcutta.

Consul-general

Beth A. Payne is the new US consul-general in Calcutta. A career diplomat, Payne was posted at US embassies in Senegal, Rwanda, Israel and Kuwait. She assumed office on August 1, succeeding Henry V. Jardine.

Kitchen fire

Two men and a woman were injured in a fire in the kitchen of a servants’ quarters in Dover Lane on Tuesday. Police said gas leaking from an LPG cylinder had caught fire. Chandra Mandal, 38, Hira Mandal, 55, and Satya Devi, 40, were admitted to hospital.
