Firewood pierces biker
Alipurduar, Aug. 4: A motor cyclist was killed in a freak accident today after a piece of firewood pierced into his neck at Salbari More in Dhupguri.
Sanjoy Sarkar (30) of Aurobindo Nagar here was coming to Alipurduar on his motorcycle with his friend Pritam (28) of Shantinagar on the pillion. After the motorcycle rammed into a firewood-laden rickshaw at Salbari More, a piece of firewood pierced into the 30-year-old’s neck and killed him on the spot. Pritam has been admitted to a nursing home in Siliguri in a critical condition.
Body found
Siliguri: Pradhannagar police recovered the body of an unidentified youth from Darjeeling More on Monday. No external injury marks were found on the body.
Drunk flees
Balurghat: A drunk gave police the slip when he was taken to a health centre for a medical test in South Dinajpur’s Kumarganj on Monday. Chanchal Roy, 30, a resident of Chhotobasanti, was arrested for creating nuisance after getting intoxicated. A search is on, police said.
Land row
Balurghat: Five persons were injured in a clash over the possession of land in Gangarampur on Sunday. The injured have been admitted to the subdivisional hospital. One person has been arrested.
Kick boxing
Siliguri: Vidipt Tamang and Johny Tamang, students of St Alfonso’s School and Nepali Kalyan School respectively have been selected to represent Bengal in the 22nd All India Kick Boxing Championship to be held in Calcutta from August 6-10. Vidipt will participate in the junior category (10-12 years) and Johny in the (18-25 years) group.
Rural panels
Balurghat: The South Dinajpur zilla parishad formed its nine permanent committees on Monday. Of the nine, four committees are headed by the RSP, and the rest by the CPM. Earlier, the CPM formed the board in the 17-member zilla parishad.
