Balurghat, Aug. 3: The district enforcement branch (DEB) of Balurghat yesterday seized 22 tonnes of spurious cement and arrested the driver of the truck carrying it.
Snehanshu Roy, a resident of Mongolpur near Balurghat, was today produced in a court and remanded in police custody for six days.
During preliminary investigation, the DEB has learnt that a racket selling spurious cement is operating in Malda. The gang uses the bags of reputed cement companies to fool customers. The spurious cement is sold at a much lower rate.
The dealers of original cement are facing a serious challenge because of the existence of the racket. Kallol Das, a distributor of ACC cement, said traders in the district were incurring a loss of Rs eight-ten crore a year to the racket. The DEB had got a tip-off from a trader that a truck was unloading spurious cement at various places.
The DEB officers stopped the truck coming from Malda at Hosssainpur. The vehicle was then taken to Mongolpur terminus to check documents. Roy could not produce papers to show that the cement bags were of a particular company.
Roy is reported to have told the officers that he used to bring spurious cement from Malda at a cheaper rate for supply in Balurghat and some other areas. Bhaskar Das, the DEB inspector, said they had collected samples of the cement to be sent for tests.
