Hailakandi, Aug. 3: Sporting Union became champions in the first division football tournament of the Hailakandi district, organised by the District Sports Association, Hailakandi.

In the much-awaited tournament final match, that was held last evening at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Stadium here, Sporting Union defeated Young Men’s Athletic Club by a margin of 3-1 goals through tie-breakers.

The match was goalless at the end of the stipulated time as both the teams lost many golden opportunities to score.

The performance of Sporting Union custodian Sahidul Islam was marvellous and for this he was awarded with a cash prize as the best goalkeeper.

In the tie-breakers, Amjad Hussain Choudhury, Hafijur Rahman Barbhuiya and Mohammad Ali Barlaskar netted the shots on behalf of the winners while Abul Hussain Choudhury scored the lone goal for the runners-up.

Assam Cricket Association president and excise minister Gautam Roy gave away the trophies. Both the finalists were awarded Rs 3,000 in cash.

Sahidul Islam also received a cash prize of Rs 1,000 for being the player of the final match.

Afjal Hussain Barbhuiya of the winning team received the topscorers’ award and a cash prize of Rs 1,000.

U-19 trials

The Assam Football Association (AFA) has recommended two talented footballers from Cachar district, Rajashree Karmakar and Dayawati Singha, for the national under-19 girls’ trials to be held from August 25, says our Guwahati/ Hailakandi bureau.

The All-India Football Federation will fix the duration and venue of the camp soon, said AFA secretary Ankur Dutta.

The two have become the first girl footballers from Barak Valley to be selected for a national camp.

“The AIFF has sought the names for some girls for the under-19 girls’ team. We have already recommended the two talented girls from Cachar district. Besides, we also recommended four others later on. Their invitations are yet to come,” Dutta said.

Rajashree Karmakar came into the limelight during the first Samayik Prasanga Cup women’s football championship held in 2006.

Dayawati Singha came to be known for her performance in the 2007 edition of the tournament.

Both the girls were adjudged Best Players in the tournament and final on different occasions.
