Madhuban (Giridih), Aug. 3: When swanky cars of pilgrims or tourists enter Madhuban, residents look on in wonder. For, such luxury is a far cry from their pitiable condition.
Several political parties have held seminars here against the backdrop of scenic beauty, but hardly anybody bothered to develop the basic infrastructure of the place. Worse, just a few of the visiting leaders meet the villagers to know about their needs.
The large number of Jain dharamshalas and kothis that provide food and lodging facilities to guests here make Madhuban a popular draw among visitors. The proximity to Parasnath Hills also attracts thousands of pilgrims every year to Madhuban under Pirtand block, one of the oldest blocks of Giridih.
But the fate of the residents of this area has not changed much over the years. Most of the areas do not have proper roads, water supply, electricity and other basic amenities.
So far, the government has not chalked out any concrete plan for the development of this area.
The plan to develop Madhuban and Parasnath as tourist destinations is also in a limbo.
Sewayatan, a non-government organisation (NGO) running on the donations of Jain community members, had adopted two villages near Madhuban to develop them but the outcome was not inspiring.
“In the absence of any concrete employment source, we depend entirely on outsiders and tourists. In the off-season, we find it difficult to earn enough for two square meals,” said Kisku Tuddu, a villager.
Taking advantage of all these, Maoists have made a strong base here.
