BRIEFS

Girl at gunpoint

Balurghat, Aug. 1: The father of a 16-year-old in South Dinajpur’s Bangshihari has accused a local CPM leader’s nephew of taking her away at gunpoint and charged the police with protecting him for a week.

“Muktarul Hussain led an armed gang and forcibly took my daughter away. They beat us up when we tried to resist,” he said. The girl had apparently turned down his proposals several times. The inspector in charge of Bangshihari said he was on leave and did not know about the case.

Post-mortem

Calcutta: The high court has admitted a PIL seeking its intervention to prevent delay in handing over post-mortem reports to police. In North 24-Parganas, the police are yet to receive 1,275 reports, the petitioner said. The case will be heard four weeks later.

Minority loan

Chinsurah: Minority community students in medicine or engineering colleges will be provided with interest-free education loans worth Rs 3 crore this year.
