Beach Babies

Shankarpur is famous for its fishing harbour. Indeed, the sleepy town derives its character from its busy fishing activity. From the trawlers to the ice factories to the processing of fish to making sutki machh, this is the central activity of this destination.

However, a serene beach and a tamarind forest along with a beautiful sunset over the sea gives Shankarpur another identity as well. A foamy green ocean rushes to the beach. We spent our time strolling on the sand and chasing hermit crabs.

Obviously, seafood is the mainstay in Shankarpur; with a variety of fish to spicy crabs on offer. Don’t hesitate to pick from hilsa, topsey, parsey, lobsters and other treats.

As for local must-sees, Chandaneswar, Talsari and Udaypur would make it to the list. My pick, though, was Mandarmoni, with its long motorable beach. You can also take a right from Chaulkhola and drive about seven kilometres to the Bengal Salt Factory — a vestige of the British era. The process is ancient and is very interesting to watch. Attempts are being made to retain the beauty and ecological balance of the factory and its outskirts by making the place a plastic-free zone.
