Jamshedpur, July 30: Unable to bear the torment of mental depression and fed up with his deteriorating physical condition, a 12-year-old committed suicide today.
Akbar Ali, the son of Mudassar Ali, was found hanging from the ceiling of the bathroom in his house on Mahto Para Road under Jugsalai police station late last night.
Mudassar said his son was mentally “sick” and was undergoing “traditional” treatment, but neighbours said the boy had been subjected to primitive treatment.
Mudassar said last night his son went to bed after treatment, but woke up in the middle of the night and went to the bathroom. “Several family members were awakened when Akbar went to the bathroom. But when he did not return for a long time, I went to check on him. I called for Akbar repeatedly, but when there was no response, I forcibly opened the bathroom door and found him hanging from the ceiling,” said Ali.
He said the boy was rushed to a local nursing home where he was declared as brought dead. Ali’s relatives said the deceased was suffering from fever for the past few weeks. His parents had tried to cure him by administering some medicines on their own, but when there was no sign of improvement, they considered the illness to be a fallout of black magic.
“Instead of consulting doctors, the boy’s parents went to people who practise black magic and sought their help,” said a relative of the family.
“Despite the fact that Akbar’s condition deteriorated, his parents did not take him to any hospital or doctor. On being subjected to such primitive treatment, the boy’s mental health deteriorated further. Finally, he committed suicide,” he added.
A father of two children, Mudassar earned a living by hawking for scrape iron.
Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended on the locality as news of the death spread.
The police registered a case under unnatural death based on the statement of Mudassar Ali, before sending the body to the MGM for post-mortem.
