Three kids drown

Cooch Behar, July 29: Three children, including two siblings, drowned in a pond at a village in Cooch Behar today.

The siblings, Sona (6) and Jaba Roy (7), were students of Class I, while Anamika Roy (9) studied in Class III in a school at Madhya Marichbari.

Anjali Roy who lost her son Sona and daughter Jaba said the children used to come back home after school. “We were anxiously waiting for them when the news came,” added the wife of a day labourer. Anamika’s mother Minati Roy said none of the children knew swimming. “It is a mystery why they had planned to take a swim.”

Puspanath Roy, a resident who first noticed that school bags and uniforms were lying beside the pond with nobody around, said: “I became curious and cried for help. Local youths fished out the bodies.” The bodies have been sent for post mortem, police said.
