Three get life sentence

Malda, July 29: A 26-year-old man and two of his accomplices were today sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his mother three years ago.

The fifth judge of the fast track court of Malda, Santanu Roy, awarded the sentence to Tala Mardi, Janata Hembram and Dipali Hansda of Dhamoir in Bamongola for hacking Tala’s mother Sumi Tudu to death, suspecting her to be a “witch”.


Leopard cats

Jalpaiguri: The two leopard cat kittens rescued here on Monday are likely to be sent to the Darjeeling zoo, foresters said on Tuesday.


Ivories found

Islampur: Customs officials recovered two ivories from a Bihar-bound private bus near Ghoshpukur on Tuesday. Amal Bhowmik, the superintendent of customs, said the ivories which were cut into eight pieces weighing 16.7kg and worth Rs 16 lakh were in a briefcase found in the bus. No arrests have been made.


E-service

Siliguri: The first of several Common Services Centres or Tathya Mitra Kendras was inaugurated on Tuesday on the Matigara panchayat samiti office premises in Shivmandir. E-services like online bill payments, booking tickets, downloading forms for job applications and submitting them, market studies and selling of local produces can be availed of from this centre.
