Jamshedpur, July 29: It was JRD Tata’s 104th birth anniversary and the city was seen celebrating the day with zest and gusto. Festivity gripped the steel city and its citizens participated in the events organised by Tata Steel today.
On one hand there were sports events, which form a major part of Tata Steel activities and on the other there were social works like health camp for underprivileged girls, team building and youth leadership development camp.
The celebration started in the morning by paying homage to the legend at JRD Tata Sports Complex. It was followed by a thematic exhibition inaugurated by Tata Steel vice-president (corporate services) Partha Sengupta.
The sports events started from July 26 and came to an end today. The results of the events which took place during the four-day extravaganza were declared today.
Zeal and enthusiasm were at premium as boys and girls took part in the inter-school cross-country race in the morning.
Sunny Gondua of St Robert’s School, Parsudih, won the 3km junior boys’ title while Dikha Aloke of the same school bagged the senior girls’ title. In the 5km race for senior boys, Ranjit Kumar Singh of SDSM School for Excellence bagged the first slot defeating Shailesh Hembram of St Mary School.
Sunita Murmu St Robert’s also stamped its authority on the 2km race for junior girls putting it across Motilal Nehru Public School athlete.
Rajendra Vidyalaya triumphed in the inter-school handball tournament and JH Tarapore School had to be content with the runner-up spot. Pugilists from Tata Steel Training Centre paved their way to glory by clinching the winner’s trophy outplaying Sitaramdera Urban Services in the inter-bustee boxing event.
Tata Steel Training Centre (violet) stole thunder in the intra-coaching centre cricket tournament (Under-12) defeating Tata Steel Training Centre (pink) while the Tata Steel Training Centre (silver) outfit came better against their yellow counterparts in the under-14 age group played at Keenan Stadium.
In the inter-community tennis ball cricket tournament, held at the same venue, Miracle XI Sakchi beat KSMS Rockers by five runs. The former scored 51 runs in the stipulated 12 overs before stopping their opponents at 46.
Participants turned up in large numbers for inter-school swimming, archery, tennis, table tennis as well as inter-community badminton, basketball and handball, inter-bustee volleyball events held at JRD Tata Sports Complex on the concluding day. Supporters and their fellow schoolmates came to cheer their friends at the venue.
One of the key highlights of the occasion was inauguration of team building and youth leadership development camp organised at Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS). The three-day residential leadership training programme at Pipla centre of TSRDS would witness participation of 36 youths (24 male and 12 female) from four different blocks — Patamda, Potka, Jamshedpur and Seraikela. The camp has been organised with the objective to enhance leadership qualities among rural youth.
A quiz competition was held at Michael John auditorium in Bistupur on the concluding day where Shritama Bose and Ankita Tibdewal from Sacred Heart Convent School emerged winners after showing their presence of mind and intellect.
The other events of the day were Pregnant Mothers and Baby Mela at Sukinda where women and kids came forward for consultation.
AIDS awareness programme with street plays and folk songs were also part of the celebrations. The company undertook a massive drive of chlorinating all wells in Bamnipal village and a special cycle rally was organised to spread sanitation awareness in Patamda.
