The Music Wizards performs at CC&FC

Their gurus have done it. Then, it was the turn of the students to bring forth their kind of fusion in a recent concert at CC&FC. The Music Wizards, a young bunch, promised a repertoire comprising original compositions laced with ragas and sonatas.

Curiously enough, The Music Wizards — Pranab on keyboard (a student of V. Balsara), Soumya on Indian and Latin percussion (a student of Pandit Shankar Ghosh and Monojit Dutta), Anupam on violin and Avishek on vocals (training under Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty), Sumit on drums from Calcutta School of Music and flautist Arunabha (a sangeet bisharad from Lucknow University) — did not exactly offer magic. With originals like Creation, which attempted to fuse Latin styles with Sajan more ghar ayo, to explorations of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, to experiments with Arabic music, the performance left much to be desired, especially in stylistic transitions. A little more thought put into composition would have surely helped.
