Post-blast, state sounds red alert

Bhubaneswar, July 27: Orissa police sounded an alert and top officers reviewed security situations, as 16 blasts ripped through Ahmedabad 24 hours of the Bangalore blasts.

The alert followed instructions from the home ministry and security was beefed up at crowded junctions of the city and patrolling was intensified.

“It’s a general alert. There is no immediate threat as such, but one cannot rule out the possibility of an attack. We need to remain prepared for any eventuality,” said police commissioner B.K. Sharma.

As a matter of precaution, adequate police personnel have been posted at state temples. Similarly, mobile patrol teams are on alert around the temple premises and areas.

Police have also deployed personnel at sensitive points and vital installations. The public have been requested to co-operate with the police in case of checks. Quick reaction teams and inspectors have been directed to remain alert. Also, bomb disposal squads have been asked to move around the Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri.

Security in Biju Patnaik Airport, railway station and the interim test range at Chandipur (Balasore) has been tightened.

“We have beefed up security in almost all the crowded places and deployed extra personnel. Special surveillance is on at railway stations, bus stands, airports and hotels in the city,” said deputy commissioner of police Himanshu Lal.

Police have also appealed to citizens to report any suspicious movement or object to its nearest police station or at emergency call numbers.

Both Bangalore and Ahmedabad have BJP governments at its helm.
