Corporal punishment on rise
- Teachers beat up students for trivial mistakes

Ranchi, July 27: A preliminary investigation by the district education officer, (DEO), A.K. Kumar, today revealed that the student of DAV, Dhurwa, Arvind Kumar was beaten up by his mathematics teacher for scoring low in the examination.

This incident once again brings to light the atrocities being perpetrated by teachers and is forcing parents and teachers to rethink the problem of corporal punishment in schools.

Four days ago, the parents of a Class VIII student, Siddhartha Somani (13) of Delhi Public School (DPS) lodged an FIR against his history teacher, Arun Kumar Sinha for beating his son. Siddhartha’s crime was that he asked for a book from his classmate while his history teacher was in class.

According to the report, on Friday the teacher of DAV used a stick to beat up the student as he had scored low percentage in mathematics, said Arvind’s classmates.

After learning about the incident from the victim’s mother, Indu Choudhary, the school administration reported it to the DEO.

The report said that the teacher had pulled Arvind’s collar and had used a stick to assault the teenager.

Kumar said that when he consulted the acting principal of the school, Poonam Kumar, she, too, conceded that the teacher had also pulled the Arvind’s collar and used a stick to “discipline” him.

According to the victim’s mother, Arvind has been left traumatised by the beating and has slid into depression. The teenager refuses to communicate with the people around him.

District education officer Kumar told The Telegraph that the “incident is being monitored closely”.

“When we consulted the boy’s parents they told us that the teacher was pressurising him to take private tuition from her. When the boy refused, he started beating her with stick.

“We are going to take action against the teacher in two to three day’s time. She has been told not to report to the school for the time being,” the DEO said.
