BDR kills jawan

Malda, July 27: A BSF jawan was shot dead during an unprovoked firing by the Bangladesh Rifles in a Malda village last night.

Yadur Appa, 25, was killed at Daulatpur. On Wednesday, a jawan was killed and a villager injured by Bangladeshi bullets in the same district.

Bengal lags

Calcutta: The University Grants Commission said on Sunday 15 out of the 19 Bengal districts were below the national gross enrolment ratio for colleges. The ratio is the number of potential students divided by the actual number of enrolled students. The national average is 11 per cent. In the 15 Bengal distri- cts, it is below 7.

Ticket jump

Behrampore: A Class IX student travelling without ticket jumped off a running train near Murshidabad, 215km from Calcutta. Noor Alam Biswas’s brother Saddam had a ticket but he didn’t. Noor is in hospital.
