Dance, dance...

He was one of the first Bollywood actors to take the television route (“I pioneered the trend with Superhit Muqabla in the early 90s,” he says). And now Chunkey Pandey is back on the small screen as a judge on Zara Nachke Dikha, STAR One’s two-episode-old dance reality show. A t2 chat with the irrepressible Chunkey…

This is your first shot at a television reality show. What made you take up Zara Nachke Dikha?

This may be my first in terms of a reality show, but it’s not my first shot at television. I started off hosting Superhit Muqabla as early as 1992 and then I did a comic act called Rocky’s 99 on Filmy which became immensely popular. To come back to television, I was looking for something that would be on a par with what I have done on the small screen in the past. I found Zara Nachke Dikha pretty interesting in terms of the concept — girls versus boys. The battle of the sexes always makes for spicy fare (laughs). I am really looking forward to it.

As a judge, how are you planning to approach the show?

Zara Nachke Dikha is about television stars fighting it out on the dance floor and quite honestly, it does become a little difficult to judge people from the same fraternity. I know many of the contestants on a personal basis. I have worked in a film with Delnaaz (Paul). Bakhtiyaar (Irani) and I have done a lot of shows together. What I will look to do on the show is lighten the atmosphere, encourage the participants and yes, help them out with dancing tips, if necessary (smiles).

You have done a lot of dancing in your films. Do you enjoy dancing?

I can’t say that I really enjoy it but I have never shied away from it too. But yes, I’m glad that I’m not one of the participants on Zara Nachke Dikha (laughs).

Your co-judge Malaika Arora Khan has been a judge on another reality dance show in the past. Does having her on the show help?

Having Malaika around always helps (laughs). She is good fun to be with and since she is already experienced in judging shows of this kind, it should be a great bonus for Zara Nachke Dikha.

Zara Nachke Dikha is a rare reality show where public voting does not play a role in the results. Does that put more pressure on you and Malaika?

It sure does. In other reality shows, the judges voice their opinion regarding a particular performance and then it is the audience voting that generally decides the course of the show. But here that is not the case. And as I mentioned earlier, the fact that we have been entrusted with the responsibility of judging people from the same fraternity makes the task a lot more difficult.

You have quite a few films coming up this year…

There are loads of them actually. There is Shortcut, Hello Darling and another film with Subhash Ghai’s Mukta Arts, Ishaan with Shreyas Talpade and a film called Khalbali Hai Khalbali. In fact, I have more films than Shah Rukh and Aamir this year (laughs).
