Kokrajhar, July 14: Tezpur, Tinsukia, Charaideo and Bongaigaon moved into the second round of the 32nd All-Assam Sub-Junior Football Championship under way at Gosaigaon in Kokrajhar.
Playing at the U.N. Brahma ground in the morning session, Tezpur defeated Lakhimpur 2-1. Nishanta Barua scored both the goals for Tezpur in the 4th and 29th minutes while Amal Boro reduced the margin in the 14th minute.
In another match at Gossaigaon College ground, Charaideo edged past Barpeta 2-1. Ashim Rajkhowa scored both the goals in the 21st and 40th minutes for the winners while Uttam Das scored for Barpeta in the dying minutes of the match.
In an evening match, Tinsukia downed Nazira 4-1 through tiebreakers. Nitu Boro scored the first goal for Nazira in the second minute of the game. However, Suraj Pasha of Tinsukia equalised in the 79th minute.
In the tiebreakers, the Nazira boys could not convert any of their shots, compared to Tinsukia’s three goals to take the final score to 4-1.
In another evening match, Bongaigaon defeated Nalbari 5-0 to move into the second round. Bishnu Bahadur Rabha scored three goals in the 2nd, 72nd and 89th minutes of the match. Kishore Barman scored two goals in the 7th and 69th minutes.
In tomorrow’s matches, Lakhimpur will play Chirang, Nagaon will meet Mangaldoi, Kokrajhar will clash with Sadia and Bhergaon will face Jorhat.
Three share lead
Three players shared the lead with two points each in the second round of the 3rd Moirangleima Prize-money Mini Open Chess Tournament, 2008 played at Singjamei says our sports correspondent from Imphal.
A. Chakravorti, along with A. Romeo and K. Suvson, are currently occupying the top spot in the open category, followed by Rk. Bhogen, S. Premjit, Th. Udoy, Bit Irom, Th. Sunachand, Loken Luwang and A. Ratan Singh with 1.5 points each.
