Man arrested at airport

A 38-year-old man was arrested at the airport on Monday after he arrived from Singapore for allegedly tampering with his passport. Ashok Singh, a resident of Delhi, wanted to settle down in the UK. But his visa application was rejected. He went to Singapore on July 9 and met a woman in a hotel who allegedly promised to first take him to Australia and then to the UK. Since Singh could not erase the visa rejection stamp on his passport, he allegedly pasted the pages together before returning to Calcutta. He was handed over to airport police.

Extortionist held

Sonu Sohankar, in his early 30s, was arrested in Burrabazar on Monday evening for allegedly trying to extort money from traders. Police received several complaints against him.

Student protest

Students seeking admission demonstrated outside the office of the principal of Heramba Chandra College on Monday afternoon. They were demanding that all students whose names appeared on the third admission lists of the college be admitted since there were enough vacancies. The college authorities said this was not possible and called the police. The students left after the principal promised to meet them on Tuesday.

Road renamed

Alipore Road was renamed Bhanu Bhakta Sarani on Monday. Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya said the decision to rename the road after the celebrated Nepali poet was made after a request by the Nepal consulate.

Missing boy

Bhaskar Mondal, a student of Class VIII of Kodalia Boys’ School, has been reported missing from his home in Subhasgram, Sonarpur, since July 11. A missing diary was lodged by the family members on Monday. A preliminary investigation revealed that two other youths are missing from the locality.

Boy missing

Bikram Hari, 35, was arrested in Barrackpore on Monday for allegedly trying to chop off a two-year-old boy’s hand. Hari had an affair with the boy’s mother before her marriage.

Stolen phone

Somnath Mondal, a Dum Dum resident, was arrested on Friday for allegedly using cellphones stolen from a courier firm.
