Discus thrower to leave India

New Delhi: Olympic-bound discus thrower Harwant Kaur on Sunday said she was shifting her base to Australia because she did not have a good job in India to continue her athletics career.

The Punjab-based athlete’s decision puts a question mark over her participation at next month’s Beijing Olympics

“I am shifting base to Australia because I don’t even have a good job in India and I may represent Australia in international competitions,” she told a news channel.

Harwant alleged that she was not given a promotion by the Punjab Police and instead demoted to the rank of constable from Assistant sub-inspector, the news channel reported. The report added that she had not received salary for the last three months and was even humiliated by her department. (PTI)
