Guwahati, July 13: Sunrise Athletic Club today set up a final clash with Sports Authority of India SC in the 4th N.N. Bhattacharjee invitation knockout football championship on Tuesday. It defeated Green Valley Sports Club through sudden death in the second semi-final at Nehru Stadium here.
Abdul Khan spoilt the party for Green Valley when he took the first kick of sudden death and the shot rebounded off the woodwork.
Earlier, during regulation time, the match ended in a 1-1 draw when substitute Asish Halder restored parity in the penultimate minute with a nudge off a goalmouth melee after receiving a pass from Nigerian playmaker Edoho Gilbert. The tie-breakers also failed to break the deadlock with both sides finding the net off four shots each.
The goalkeepers saved the shots by Abhijit Nandi of Sunrise and Sajan Kumar Singh of Green Valley.
Striker Apurba Phukan drew first blood, scoring for Green Valley in the 39th minute.
The first half was an evenly poised affair with both sides making umpteen forays into the opponent territories and missing the targets each time by whiskers.
However, in the second half, the Sunrise men put their best foot forward to keep their opponents on the back foot most of the time.
In the tie-breakers, Prasanta Singh, Sumen Ghosh, Abraham Goodluck and Anupam Chetia scored for Green Valley while for Sunrise the scorers were Asish Kumar Nandi, L. Arunjit Singh, Kunal Ghosh and Opiee Richard. Pollung Gonmei converted the match-winning kick in sudden death.
The SAI men on Saturday made it to the final edging past last year’s runners-up Dynamo Club 5-3 through tie-breakers in the first semi-final.
The regulation time of the match ended in a goalless draw.
In the tiebreakers, Rajesh Das, Chayaram Basumatary, Prakash Roy, Trideep Hazarika and Manaswar Basumatary converted the kicks for SAI while S.K. Jahangir Hosen, Samir Dutta and Lalrinfela were the successful shooters for Dynamo.
Dynamo had lost the match during regulation time itself when Raja Guha Thakurata let his team down missing a penalty kick, which was awarded following a handball by Trideep Hazarika in the 51st minute.
The final will be played on Tuesday.
