Sourav, Rahul ignored for Champions Trophy

Calcutta: The national selectors have stuck to their policy of backing youth when selecting the side for one-day cricket. Former captains Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly were ignored among the 30 probables for the ICC Champions Trophy in September.

Sachin Tendulkar was the only senior player who found a place in the list announced by Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Niranjan Shah after the meeting in Mumbai. Yuvraj Singh and Irfan Pathan, axed from the 16-strong Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour, expectedly found berths in the probables list.

Bengal’s Manoj Tiwary found a place among the players.

“It’s always nice to be part of the probables. If I can do well in Australia in the Emerging Players tournament, I hope to be in the final squad,” Tiwary said.

Also included were national under-19 captain Virat Kohli of Delhi, Saurashtra’s all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and Mumbai’syoungsters Abhishek Nayar and batsman Ajinkya Rahane.

Batsmen: Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Mohammed Kaif, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Robin Uthappa, Suresh Raina, S. Badrinath, Manoj Tiwary, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Ajinkya Rahane
