Cops harass truck drivers

Jamshedpur, July 6: Police extorting money from truck or trailer drivers is a common sight in the steel city. But the shocking thing is the extent these men in khaki go to get their palm greased.

Any truck driver can tell you the story. Heavy vehicle drivers who are caught plying on the road after no-entry time begins have to escape from the clutches of the law-enforcers by paying a hefty sum of money.

The police do not take steps against to prosecute them for violating rules instead they ask for bribe.

A classic example of traffic police harassing a truck driver was witnessed early on Saturday morning.

It was about 6.00am, when no-entry time starts, a truck driver tried to sneak out of Sakchi roundabout, expecting that he would not be spotted by any cop. He had traversed some distance when a traffic constable waved him to stop.

The constable boarded the truck and talked with the driver. All of a sudden, the driver got off the truck and started running towards Mango.

The constable also ran behind him. The driver entered the premises of Hatighora temple and then headed for Gandhi Ghat. The constable almost managed to catch him. On finding no alternative, the driver jumped into the river. The constable took a turn and walked back to the Sakchi roundabout .

On seeing the man drowning, some milkmen who were near the river jumped to his rescue. He was brought out of the water.

According to eyewitness, a milkman asked the man whether he was a thief who was running from the cop. He explained what happened and he jumped into the river as the constable was asking for a hefty sum of money from him.

The milkman went to the constable at the roundabout and slapped him.

Deputy superintendent of police (traffic) Aman Kongari confirmed the incident to be true. He claimed to have showcaused the constable in question.

“I have asked the constable to explain his conduct which have led the man to jump into the river. I wou- ld look into similar incidents and try to put an end to it as soon as possible,” he said.
