Women rule in lawn bowl
- Three state players set for Malaysia meet

Ranchi, July 6: Women have once again done the state proud, and this time in a game which itself is new in India.

Lovely Choubey has secured the first position at the First National Federation Cup Inter-state Lawn Ball Championship held here from June 25 to June 27.

The national-level rankings were released today. Of the first eight rankers, Chandan Kumar Singh secured the third position in the men’s category, followed by Dinesh Kumar and Chotku Oraon at the fifth and seventh positions, respectively.

Kavita Kumari and Rupa Rani Tirkey secured the third and fourth positions, in the women’s category,

Three of the six players selected for the Malaysia Cup to be held from August 7 to 12 are from Jharkhand — Lovely, Kavita and Chandan Kumar Singh.

M .K. Pathak, the general secretary of Jharkhand Bowling Association who is also the coach, said: “This is the first time that there are so many players from Jharkhand. We are very pleased with their performance especially since they got so little time to practice. We will organise a felicitation ceremony for them soon.”

“This game is relatively new for me as well as for the rest of the country. Earlier, I participated only in athletics events. I have started lawn ball practice just about four to five months ago and had not expected to do so well. Now I’m concentrating completely on the Malaysia Cup. I’m trying to put in as many hours of practice as I can, because we will have to play eight to 10 matches a day there,” Lovely said.
