Guwhati, July 3: Food Corporation of India (FCI) Sports Club set up a quarter-final clash with defending champions Sunrise AC, by blanking out City Police 3-0 in a first round match of the 4th N.N. Bhattacharjee knockout football tournament at Nehru Stadium here today.
In the 13th minute FCI striker Thomson Langthasa ruffled the City Police net with a solo effort.
Still trailing by a goal in the second half, the policemen regrouped for a few concerted attacks into the FCI territory but the strong defence of the latter thwarted those attempts with ease.
In what can be considered a boon, Pratap Basumatary of City Police committed a foul against Langthasa, and FCI were awarded a penalty by referee Akhtar Hussain.
Langthasa shot the ball home for the second goal.
Down by two goals, the policemen went all out against FCI. The experienced FCI men, taking advantage of the situation, launched a few counter-attacks, one of which paid off in the 76th minute when the seasoned David March Goyary found the net off a cross from Langthasa from the left flank for the win.
