Shillong, July 2: Meghalaya, which is embroiled in a boundary dispute with Assam, has set up two additional police outposts in West Khasi Hills, adjacent to Kamrup district of Assam.
Meghalaya inspector-general of police B.L. Buam told reporters today that the two additional border outposts at Lejadubi and Ktiehthwiab were set up primarily to check crime and movement of militants from Assam.
The outposts will also protect the people from encroachers. The Khasi residents of Langpih (known as Lampi in Assam), a hamlet in West Khasi Hills which has been a bone of contention between the two states, have been alleging that its Nepali residents were illegal settlers who came from Assam. The NGOs and border residents of Meghalaya had wanted a police outpost in Langpih. The state government has not done so yet while Assam has already set up a border outpost there.
