Sacked employee slashes wrists

An employee of CMRI, Pulin Gharai, whose services were terminated on Monday, tried to commit suicide in front of the room of the CEO of the hospital, police said. Gharai slashed his wrists but hospital employees caught him before he could inflict major injury on himself. Gharai is among five employees of CMRI suspended in April 2007 after allegedly beating up members of another union on the hospital premises. The other four have already been sacked.

In net for job promise

A man was arrested at Calcutta airport on charges of duping people by promising them jobs. Arunabha Das, a resident of Baguiati, had promised Amarnath Keshari a job with a private airline. Keshari alleged that he had paid Das Rs 85,000. On Monday, Das had called Keshari to the airport and demanded more money. Keshari then lodged a complaint with airport police.

Salt Lake suicide

Udayshankar Saha, 32, committed suicide by setting himself ablaze in a flat in Salt Lake’s KB block on Monday afternoon. Police said Saha, a driver, was suffering from depression. In the same block, 22-year-old Sucharita Chakrabarty tried to commit suicide by slashing her wrists. She was admitted to a local nursing home, where her condition is stable.

Robbery

A gang of three raided a petrol pump at Rajarhat on Sunday night and fled with Rs 50,000. Officers of Rajarhat police station said the gang arrived around 2.30am and escaped on two motorcycles.

Flat robbery

Burglars looted nearly a lakh in cash and jewellery from the flat of Goutam Biswas at Baishnabghata Patuli, on the southern fringes, on Saturday night, police said on Monday. Biswas and his wife were not at home at the time. The security guard of the housing estate has been detained.

Cabbie drowns

Taxi driver Bireswar Pandey, 45, drowned in a pond at Mukundapur, in Sonarpur, on Monday. Police are investigating if there was any foul play.

Flight returns

Air India’s Port Blair flight returned to Calcutta after being unable to land at the destination because of bad weather on Monday. The flight, with 64 passengers, took off around 7am but returned at 10.25am. An airline official said it would fly again on Tuesday.

Birds seized

Sleuths from the wildlife protection wing of the detective department on Sunday seized 81 birds, including 55 parakeets, from a youth in Narkeldanga. Acting on a tip-off, the sleuths raided the youth’s residence at 1A Narkeldanga Main Road and seized the birds before arresting him. The birds were handed over to the forest department.

Fire at factory

A fire broke out in a hosiery unit on Banamali Sarkar Street around 4.50am on Monday. Five fire tenders and CESC officials brought the blaze under control around 1.30pm. A team of forensic experts is investigating the cause of the fire.

Found hanging

The body of a 35-year-old food stall-owner, Syed Hamidul Rahman, was found hanging in his Central Garden Reach Road shanty on Monday. No suicide note was found.
