Erosion scare

Malda, June 30: A rising Ganga has gobbled up over 500sqm in Malda’s Manikchak over the past 24 hours.

The Manikchak BDO said the erosion started at Domhat, 45km from Malda town. An alert has been sounded in four villages.

Jaldapara

Calcutta: The Jaldapara sanctuary will be upgraded to a national park. The state has sought the Centre’s approval for the move, forest minister Ananta Ray said. The chief minister expressed concern over increasing incidents of tigers straying into Sunderbans villages and Ray said pig farming would be encouraged there so that they can be released as prey.

CPM assault

Krishnagar: CPM youths went on the rampage in Shantipur municipality in Nadia, protesting the chairman’s absence when they went to submit a memorandum at noon. A clerk was hit with a stick and had to be hospitalised.
